The Extended Range
The Extended Range, originally designed by Sam Rizzetta, has a wide range, and a truly deep, warm and majestic sound. For the solo player, or the musician who sings with their instrument, the older model Extended Range was a great instrument. But at 24 lbs (11 kilos), it was not something to take backpacking, and the 24" (61cm) breadth made it a bit of trouble to handle.
In response to pleas for compromise, some years back I shrunk the size somewhat, and dropped the string spacing from 1 1/8" to 1 1/16". The sound is still quite warm and full, and as would be expected with a smaller soundbox, it has a bit more useful punch..
Redwood or western red cedar top and back.
Extended Range weighs 20 lbs (9 kilos), is 49” (124.5 cm) wide 21.5" (54.5cm) broad and 4" (11cm) deep. 1 1/16" (27mm) string spacing.
As with the LCF Compact and LCF Forte, a carbon fiber reinforced version of the ER is now available. As with those, the CF gives more tuning stability and somewhat lighter weight ( about 17 lbs). For the LCF Extended Range, however, it was also possible to make a version with a CF laminate soundboard without adding much brightness. Those wishing to get the maximum possible tuning stability in a large hammered dulcimer should consider it.
